King Charles Cavalier Breed
The King Charles Cavalier is a type of small dog. It is a type of spaniel. It is comparatively smaller than the other spaniel breeds. They are also classified as a standard kind of toy dog. A full grown King Charles Cavalier dogs are usually the size of teen dogs of other spaniel breeds. They have beautiful smooth furry tails. The pure King Charles Cavalier usually has furs consisting of colors such as black, white, tan, ruby and etc. They are cute and well-behaved. They are friendly with both human beings and animals. Nowadays it is one of the most popular breeds in the UK and USA and all over the world.
The history of the King Charles Cavalier breed goes far back. The current members of this species are believed to possess the same genetic configuration of the King Cavalier that Charles II owned during the restoration period. At least this was the attempt of breeders throughout the various phases of its breeding. Their breeding process was seriously hampered during the world wars. But now they are bred both in the UK and USA.
The male dogs of this species weigh about 5-8 kilograms and so does the female. Their height is around 12-13 inches. They live usually under ten years, though adequate care can enhance their life span to almost fourteen years. Their small stature makes them very eligible for being lapdog.
These dogs are quite social. They never hold back on socializing with people and larger animals. They bond quite easily with children, adults and elderlies. They have quite incredible adaptation power. They fit in very easily to any environment and location. They are as well adapted to the country as they are to the town. They do not even refrain from socializing with much larger dogs.
They are naturally quite obedient and curious. Their playful nature makes them an excellent choice for keeping them as pets. They can also help to train other animals as they can bond very easily with other pets around the house. They are intelligent but their friendly nature makes them vulnerable to some problems. They are not a very good choice for becoming guard dogs. They tend to become friendly even with strangers. So it is not a very good choice to leave them alone at the house and thinking the place is safe.
They love to cuddle. They love sleeping on the couch, pillow or even on your lap. As they never complain about spending a long time on the laps of people they are also a very good choice for patients and senior citizens. Their presence is therapeutic due to their happy and gentle nature. They are also a very good companion for morning and evening walks.
They also have few troublesome traits. Spaniels genetically, have very strong hunting instincts. They have tendency to chase things. This also includes the vehicles on the streets. They will run after any moving thing so the streets never become quite safe for them. The hunter in them drives them to hunt small animals and birds. So they endanger other smaller species of animals. But with proper training from the owner they can make peace with even hamsters.
Cavaliers need some special treatments. They need regular exercise: a walk round the park or a fence to run to. They love to be around people. If left alone a long time they start to whine and bark. They also want their owner’s attention. They become very anxious if separated from the owner for more than a few hours. Their hair should be trimmed, brushed and combed regularly. They should be trained to socialize through praise, care, treats and encouragement. This training should start early in their life or they may remain anxious, shy and timid through their entire lives. Due to their chasing habit they always need a leash or a fence to keep them under control. Another thing one should remember while taking care of this breed of dogs is that they shed a lot of hair. This is generally normal for them. But if they begin to shed excessive amount of hair then one should consult a vet.
One should also be aware of certain health issues these dogs are very prone to. The first one among them is a type of inherited heart disease which is a kind of Mitral Valve disease. More than half of the Cavalier breed suffers from these conditions after crossing the fifth year of their age. This disease is the main cause of their death. So if one takes the decision to keep them as pets, they should be prepared to spend a lot of money on their heart treatment and medication.
They also tend to suffer from neurological dysfunctions. This disease is called syringomyelia. The disease causes nerve damage and the dogs usually become sensitive to touch due to unnatural skin sensations. Recent study reveals a shocking truth that about half of the dogs of this species are affected by this disease in their early years ranging from the age of six months to three years. The most horrible reality of this disease is that until now no cure has been found either to prevent or to stop it from spreading. Different eye diseases, bone joint problems are also common among them. So for ensuring a long and healthy life for a Cavalier visiting the vet occasionally is very necessary. Cavaliers should also have a very balanced diet. So owners should keep track of their diets and should not feed them outside food indiscriminately.
Even with all these negatives on the side of Cavaliers they are very popular among pet owners. They win the hearts of animal lovers with their sportiveness, intelligence, their friendly nature and their adorable appearances. Every pet has its pros on cons. So does the King Charles Cavalier. But proper care can ensure a prolonged healthy life for them. Thus, making them one of the most favorite pet dogs of present time.
